Koc University, Turkey
"I am a PhD candidate at Koç University, Turkey. I am a behavioral researcher who seeks to contribute to the understanding of identity. Specifically, emotions evoked through a sense of identity-threat and the agentic role of individuals in choosing their identities.
In my dissertation, I study the effect of envy, elicited by a sense of threat to the self, experienced by top executives on their decision-making and behavior. Drawing from social comparison theory, I define interfirm envy as a situational form of envy specific to the interfirm domain, where managers envy other firm(s). I empirically investigate the role of interfirm envy on product differentiation via the willingness to take risks.
My research interests also extend to studying the attitudinal and behavioral consequences of choice in determining one’s identity. Identity choice is defined as the extent of autonomy or intentionality associated with a particular aspect of an individual’s overall sense of self. In this line of research, I argue that individuals or entities such as brands or firms that emphasize a chosen identity (high choice, e.g. a professional identity) rather than an assigned identity (low choice, e.g. an ethnic identity) have an impact on attitudes towards brands and perceptions of egalitarianism."
